Françoise

FS-regular Gryphon combined Michel Legrand (mentioned in the Nana Mouskouri-post below) and Project Cinema, with a posting about Françoise Dorléac. Or is it?

Ever heard of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort? That was a 1967 movie by Jacques Demy, music provided by Michel Legrand. In fact, it's a musical romantic comedy featuring Catherine Deneuve in one of her cutest performances on screen (and God knows there have been quite a lot of cute performances...). It also features Françoise Dorléac (on the right of the picture, with dark hair), who happened to be Catherines older sister in real life and twin sister in the movie; she tragically died in a car crash some time later.
There's a lot of singing in the movie, BUT... with the exception of Danielle Darrieux, it's not the actors actual singing voice; instead some professional singers were hired and the actors were miming (Catherine's voice is Anne Germain, Françoise's voice is Claude Parent - never heard of them after that, I must admit).
Here's two songs from the movie: the famous La chanson des jumelles , second a song mimed by Catherine, De Delphine à Lancien complaining about her actual lover, whom she will dump later on....

  3. To me, this movie captures colour and sunlight in an unsurpassed manner. It's so positive that after having watched it you'll get grueftgesaenge on prescription. Gene Kelly is a strange phenomenon here, Catherine's sister very lovely indeed, I do not want ever to visit Cherbourg, for I'm sure it will ruin this idyllic vision of it.

  4. Er... actually it's "Rochefort". But there had been this black'n'white movie somewhat earlier, again by Jacques Demy, again with Catherine Deneuve, called "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" ;-)

  6. The sisters didn't really sing...how gauche of me not to have guessed. How naive. What a jambon am I. They still made it a good movie. Merci for finding out the real singers' names. This was one of last movies Dorleac made before she died.
